Shanghai Purui Eye Hospital welcomes U.S. ophthalmology delegation for international exchange

On the afternoon of May 16, 2018, Shanghai Purui Eye Hospital welcomed leaders and U.S. ophthalmology experts from Johnson & Johnson Vision for a visit and professional exchange. The two sides discussed new technologies in cataract care, refractive surgery and dry-eye treatment, as well as international trends, concepts and innovations in eye care.

The U.S. delegation spoke highly of the hospital’s technical capabilities and service processes. The hospital also expressed its intention to deepen professional cooperation with international ophthalmic institutions and continue strengthening the Purui Eye Hospital brand.

Accompanied by President Xiao Jianye and President Wang Fubin, the Johnson & Johnson Vision leaders and U.S. experts toured the outpatient hall, refractive surgery department, operating rooms and inpatient wards, observing the hospital’s clinical environment, facilities and systems.

The delegation recognized the hospital’s specialty development, expert-team building and detailed patient-service measures. They noted that Shanghai Purui Eye Hospital’s development approach offered valuable ideas for reference, and hoped both sides could expand cooperation in medical and research projects to better serve patients.

The delegation then joined hospital leaders for a roundtable meeting in the conference room, where both sides discussed the development of Shanghai Purui Eye Hospital in detail.

During the exchange, President Xiao Jianye introduced the hospital and its refractive surgery department. Founded in 2010 with approval from the Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau, Shanghai Purui Eye Hospital is a large comprehensive ophthalmic hospital integrating clinical care, research and teaching. As early as 2011, Dr. Joergensen from a European ophthalmology association expert group visited the hospital for academic exchange and surgical observation. To further improve facilities, the hospital also planned to relocate to a new campus that year, with expanded floor area and more planned beds.

At the time, the refractive department included several chief and associate chief physicians. Department Director Sun Ling trained under Professor Zhou Xingtao of Fudan University’s Eye & ENT Hospital and specialized in refractive error and corneal disease, including SMILE, excimer laser surgery, V4C phakic lens implantation, presbyopia procedures and complex refractive cases. Dr. Xiao Qirui’s paper, written under Professor Zhou’s guidance, comparing the safety and comfort of SMILE and LASEK for mild myopia, had been selected for presentation at the 35th ESCRS annual meeting.

Since introducing SMILE laser technology in June 2017, Shanghai Purui Eye Hospital’s refractive team had served patients from China and abroad with advanced myopia-correction care. Pablo Jimenez from Spain and his Shanghai-born wife both underwent successful vision-correction surgery at the hospital and gained clearer, freer vision.

Before leaving, representatives of Johnson & Johnson Vision and the U.S. expert group experienced the hospital’s dry-eye SPA process. The service was developed in response to increasing dry-eye needs and provides warm compresses, atomization therapy and meibomian-gland massage through the dry-eye comprehensive treatment clinic.

Most dry-eye patients experience symptom relief and improved comfort after one or two courses of treatment. After the experience, a U.S. expert representative said the eyes felt much more relaxed and comfortable, and that the dry-eye SPA was very effective.

The visit strengthened academic exchange between the hospital and international ophthalmology experts while further deepening friendship between Chinese and U.S. ophthalmic colleagues.
